A User Perspective of GNU Social

This text follows a brainstorming session that occurred yesterday at a
park nearby in Amsterdam, with elinvi and psy, from lorea.cc.

It aims at providing a non-technical view of an idealized GNU Social
application from the point of view of a sample user, in order to
broaden the reflexion on GNU Social beyond self-promotion of various
projects, and out of a purely technical scope. You need to read it
once entirely before replying, otherwise you might get lost into
details where the idea is to provide a draft of a big picture.

GNU social, true to the Unix-philosophy of small programs to do a small job, will be a decentralized social network that you can install on your own server. What if you could authorize your server to reveal as much, or as little information about you to other sites, as you wish... one time, one day, or forever?

Impact - a Free Explicit Dynamic Finite Element ProgramCrushed profile

Impact is an open source finite element program suite which can be used to predict most dynamic events such as car crashes or metal sheet punch operations. They usually involve large deformations and high velocities.

Simulations are made on a virtual three dimensional model which can be created with a pre-processor or with the built-in Fembic language. Results are viewed in a post-processor.

Jenna has some really good insights here into why Howard Rheingold is so successful at founding online communities.

There are things here that anyone can emulate, even if they do not have the star-power of Howard Rheingold :-)

EUCALYPTUS - Elastic Utility Computing Architecture for Linking Your Programs To Useful Systems - is an open-source software infrastructure for implementing "cloud computing" on clusters. The current interface to EUCALYPTUS is compatible with Amazon's EC2 interface, but the infrastructure is designed to support multiple client-side interfaces. EUCALYPTUS is implemented using commonly available Linux tools and basic Web-service technologies making it easy to install and maintain.

Yesterday, and today, Paul Hartzog and I architected the basic building blocks of Local Food Systems network architecture.

 

The idea here is to be able to make very flexible and useful architecture, that can be easily added to over time, and that can be used both on localfoodsystems.org *and* elsewhere.

The system accepts multiple inputs, processes in many useful ways, and generates multiple outputs. The system is made entirely of open source software.
